Phytochemicals & Breast Cancer

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

What is the role of phytochemicals in preventing breast cancer? Where can I get more info about phytochemicals?

--Sylvie

Answer :

Phytochemicals are plant chemicals, and many of them seem to play a role in preventing various cancers. There is probably something about them, however, that requires the interaction of several distinct components of the plant -- I don't think we can derive the same benefit, for example, from an extract in a capsule as we can from the whole food.

As far as phytochemicals that may play a role in preventing breast cancer, the best association seems to be between cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower as well as the carotenoids, found in carrots and other brightly colored vegetables. Avoiding animal fats may also be helpful, as is exercising and maintaining ideal body weight.

There are many, many books on the market dealing with herbal medicine, nutritional medicine and the like. Some of the books have valuable, well documented evidence to support the use of certain foods or herbs in certain conditions, but many are based on nothing more than the author's opinion.
